dc.description.abstract Background: A lot of strides were made over the last three decades to prevent and control HIV/AIDS epidemic. The Non Communicable disease (NCDs) burden is increasing especially in low and middle income countries. The knowledge and interventions is lacking for NCDs and HIV comorbidity. This study sought to measure the magnitude of major NCDs among adult people Living with HIV in one of the Hospitals in Addis Ababa. Objectives: To assess the magnitude and associated factors of major Non communicable diseases in PLHIV who are on care and treatment follow up at Zewditu Memorial hospital (ZMH), Addis Ababa. Methods: An Institution based cross sectional study was employed on a randomly selected 512 adult PLHIV from January 2019-Feburary 2020. Patient records were reviewed to determine the magnitude of major NCDs. Data were cleaned using EPI-INFO and exported to SPSS for analysis. Univariate and Multi-variable logistic regression analysis model was used to check the relationship between major NCDs and independent variables. Results: 512 individuals were recruited. 60% of them were female. The magnitude of Major NCDs was 18.8% (CI:15-22%). The NCDs were cardiovascular diseases [10.9% (CI:8.2-13.7%)], Diabetes mellitus [7.8% CI:5.5-10.1%], chronic respiratory disease [2.1% CI:0.9-3.4%] and Cancer [1.4% CI:0.4-2.4%]. Age bands 35-≤45 (AOR= 2.1: CI:1.1-4.06), Age 45-≤55 (AOR = 2.4; CI :1.2-4.8) and Age > 55(AOR= 3.9, CI :1.7-8.7) were found to be independently associated with development of major NCD Conclusion and Recommendation: This study pointed out considerable burden of magnitude of Major NCDs in PLHIVs. Strengthening screening of patients with HIV for NCD, particularly older patients is important for early detection, management and better outcome............ Thesis available at ACIPH Library
