Abstract:
Background: Needle stick injuries (NSI) are wounds caused by needles that accidentally puncture the skin; these are truly an occupational hazard for medical personnel who work with hypodermic and other types of needles. Nurses are the most vulnerable group of all health workers to get needles stick injuries because they commonly provide clinical service involving needles and sharps.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to assess the level needle stick injury, its associated factors and practice preventive measures among nurses working in private Hospital.
Methods: An institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted on 213 nurses, the study participants were selected by a simple random sampling method and data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. Biviraite and Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify associated factors of needle-stick injury. The associations between needles stick injury and independent factors were measured using the odds ratio at a 95% confidence interval. The statistical significance was made at a p-value of less than 0.05.
Results: Out of 213 nurses who participated in the study, 105(49.3 %) (95% CI 42.3, 56.3%) had encountered needle-stick injury in the past 12 months. Regarding practice preventive measures on needle stick-injury 91% had good practice. Work experience (AOR= 0.220 (95% CI 0.075, 0.647), Method of recapping needle (AOR=2.28(95% CI 1.097, 4.756), and Recapping needle (AOR= 0.31(0.154, 0.653) were significantly associated with the needle-stick injury.
Conclusion: The proportion of needle stick/sharp injury was high among nurses. Nurses should avoid recap the used needle by two hands and in-service education and training regarding injection safety should give periodically in order to upgrade nurse’s knowledge and skill regarding sharp handling technique....................
