Background: Complications of an unsafe abortion are a major contributor to maternal morbidity and death. When abortions are performed in safe environments, such complications can be preventable. In Ethiopia Abortion is legal in cases of rape, incest, fetal impairment, if women health is in danger, or if she is a minor who is physically or mentally unprepared for childbirth.
Objective: To assess factors associated with safe induced abortion among women of reproductive age groups attending SPHMMC in the year 2021.
Methods: A facility-based unmatched case-control study design was used in 233 reproductive age women using a structured questionnaire to assess factors associated with safe abortion. A consecutive sampling method was used to include women participating in the study. Descriptive analysis, binary and multivariable logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data.
Result: Women with age >30 had less likely to seek safe induced abortion services when compared with women with the age between 15-19 (AOR=0.013; CI=0.001-.252). Married women had less likely to have safe induced abortion as compared with the unmarried (never married and divorced) (AOR=0.004; CI= 0.001-0.022). The odd of having safe induced abortion were 17.68 times higher among women with two or more children as compared to women with no children (AOR=17.688; CI=1.902-164.507).
Conclusion and recommendation: Age, marital status and number of children were significantly associated with safe abortion after controlling for confounder on multivariate analysis. Health education concerning reproductive health should mainly target younger age female, unmarried women and women who had children in the way that it will reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy. |
