Abstract:
As we all know HIV/AIDS has continued to be a public health challenge here in Ethiopia and other African countries until the present time.
One of the major routes of transmission of the virus in Sub-Saharan Africa is through heterosexual contacts. It makes it important to study people with serodiscordant status as the disease is mainly spread from one infected partner to the non-infected partner through the heterosexual route.
Objective
To assess the prevalence and associated factors of HIV serodiscordance among couples tested at ICT department Zewditu memorial hospital, Addis Ababa-Ethiopia
Methods:
Out of the 406 patients in the index registry, by simple random sampling 270 individuals with complete records were selected., and retrospective chart review was conducted on these individual, quantitative method was employed to determine the proportion of discordant cases and Multiple regression method was used to determine the associated predictors.
Results:
The proportion of HIV serodiscordance was 6.7% with CI (4%, 10%).Out of the 18 serodiscordants 16 were females and the 2 were males .Consistent condom use during sexual contact was found to be associated with the outcome variable. Condom use with a P value of 0.02, AOR 4.33 (1.17, 15.94).The other predictors found to be associated with serodiscordance is sex of the individuals with a P value < 0.02 and AOR 0.15(0.03, 0.78)............Thesis available at Addis Continental Institute of Public Health Library
