Ethiopia has exhibited modest improvements in the nutritional status of children. Despite the country’s
progress, the burden of malnutrition has remained a formidable challenge. When the data are further
disaggregated by regions, the nutritional indicators are far worse in the pastoralist and agro-pastoralist
areas. Evidence revealed that child and maternal malnutrition are serious challenges to the pastoralist
communities in the country. Recent Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey (EDHS) data show that
the pastoral communities experience not only the highest child micronutrient deficiencies such as
anemia, but also the highest prevalence of wasting (acute malnutrition). |
