Background:
Implanon is an effective single-rod progesterone-releasing contraceptive,
preventing unwanted pregnancy within 3 years of use. Method discontinuation has a significant
impact on overall fertility rates, unintended pregnancies and induced abortions.
Objective: Magnitude of early Implanon discontinuation and its associated factors among women
of reproductive age (15-49) years old in Addis Ketema Sub-City health facilities, Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, from November 13 to january 13 ,2024.
Methodology: A health facility based Cross-sectional study was conducted using the sample of
399 women . A multistage sampling method was employed to select study participants.
interviewer-adminstered structured
questionnaire was used to collect data. Stata version 17
software was used to analyze data. Descriptive analysis was done by for frequencies and percent's.
Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used, to assess statistical association of independent
variables and early implanon discontinuation.
Result: The Magnitude of early Implanon discontinuation among women was 69.4 %(95% CI:
64.9 -73.9). women who had menstrual bleeding (AOR=2.78, 95% CI (1.06,7.03), dizziness (AOR
7.2, 95% CI (1.18, 10.46), irregular menstruation (AOR =2.25,95% C.I (1.1,4.8). and acne and
pruritus (AOR = 7.57,95% C.I (3.46,16.5) were found to be statistically significant factors with
Implanon discontinuation.
Conclusion and Recommendation: In this study, the prevalence of early implanon
discontinuation among women of reproductive age group was relatively high. experience of
mensural bleeding, experience dizziness, menstrual irregularity, acne and pruritus were found
statistically associated with early Implanon discontinuation. great effort should be made to create
awareness on side effect of implanon in order to increase the continuation rate of implanon use.
