Abstract:
Background: Despite the big reduction for under-five mortality in Ethiopia, regional variation in childhood death and unacceptably high under-five mortality rate remain to be challenge. This study focus on investigating factors the affect survivorship of under-five children in Benshangul-Gumuz Regional State using EDHS 2011 Dataset.
Objective: The main objective of the study is to identify key determinants of mortality among under-five children live in Benshangul-Gumuz regional state.
Methods: An analytical cross-sectional design is deployed through secondary data analysis of the 2011 children records EDHS dataset. Sample data were gained from stratified multi stage cluster sampling technique. Cox proportional hazards model were used to describe survival time of a child with a given set of parameters.
Results: The significant predictors of under-five mortality were Age of the mother greater than 35 at birth with HR 2.25(95%CI: 1.03, 4.89) compared to 20-35, Size of the Child being large at Birth with HR 1.7(95%CI: 1.01, 2.89) compared to normal, Literacy of the mother with HR 0.57 (95%CI: 0.34, 0.97) compared to Illiterate and Family size 5-7 with HR 0.48 (95%CI: 0.27, 0.86) compared to family members less then or equals four.
Conclusion and recommendations: Focused approach on preventing the risk factors through enhancing provision of family planning to curb late age delivery, formulating policy for creation of micro business association for income generation and keeping family size between 5 and 7. Besides the association between size of the child at birth and under-five mortality needs further investigation.
