Abstract:
Background: High fertility rate in pastoralist community significantly affect what Ethiopia has
launched as main goal to control the size of family and to control fertility rate which Ethiopia is
expecting to achieve it by 2020. Contrary to this fact long acting and permanent family planning
method (LAFPM) utilization is very poor in pastoralist community.
Objective: To understand the tendency and barriers to use Long acting and Permanent family
planning method among women in pastoralist community, Dassenech district, South Omo,
Ethiopia
Methods: Qualitative phenomenological study using in-depth interviews was conducted to
understand the view and barriers to use Long acting Reversible and Permanent family planning
method among women in pastoralist community, Dassenech district, South Omo Ethiopia.
Purposive sampling method, semi structured study guides was used to obtain relevant data and
to select the participants. Interviews are conducted in audibly private location after obtaining
verbal consent from the study participants. All interviews was recorded with participants consent
and then transcribed word by word. The transcriptions were translated to English to prepare for
analysis. Thematic analysis approach was used to analyze the qualitative data .The final data
analysis was assisted by Open Code 4.0 software.
Result: Total often women participants were interviewed and the view of LAFPM were
poor. Six barriers to use long acting and permanent family planning methods in the district
such as Social cultural Barriers, Lack of decisions making, Lack of knowledge, Language
barrier with service provider (Preference of women health professionals their own tribe),
Misconception and Poor counselling and information were explored in this study.
