Background and Rationale : There have not been many studies in our country and in the study area, that tried to identify client satisfaction to focused antenatal care and assess service gaps from clients’ perspective.
Objective: The study aims to assess the level of client satisfaction to focused antenatal care service and factors associated with it, among near–term (>36weeks) pregnant women, in health centres of Addis Ketema Sub-city, Addis Ababa.
Methods: A Facility based cross-sectional study was conducted on 282 near-term pregnant mothers from Dec.14, 2016 to May 5, 2017 using client exit interviews complemented by medical record reviews. The data was compiled, cleaned and analysed using SPSS version 21. Descriptive techniques were used to determine the level of association and display findings. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were employed to measure association and identify predictors of client satisfaction respectively. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were also calculated.
Results: The overall satisfaction of clients is found to be 43.1% (95% CI: 37.4, 48.8). Attitude of health workers (AOR = 21.08 (8.69, 51.13)), level of privacy during consultation (AOR = 9.24 (3.48, 24.55)) and costs incurred by client (>200birr) (AOR= 0.20 (0.06, 0.64)) were identified by the final model as the important predictors of client satisfaction with focused antenatal care services.
Conclusion and Recommendations: The overall satisfaction with focused antenatal care services is low (< 50%). Efforts should be geared towards improving health care provider attitudes and client privacy as well as identifying the causes and minimizing costs incurred by clients in relation to ANC visits and services.
