dc.description.abstract Background: Ethiopia was one of the countries with the highest rates of maternal deaths. Its skilled birth attendance is the lowest in the world. Large majority of women give birth at home. Only 15% of pregnant mothers deliver at health facility. The rate is lower (14.7%) in Oromia Regional State where this study was conducted. Objective: To explore reasons Borena Oromo mothers in pastoralist part of Oromia region deliver at home. Methods: Phenomenological qualitative research design was used to explore the experiences of mothers who delivered at home recently. Twelve in-depth interviews and two key informant interviews were conducted with mothers delivered at home recently. Thematic analysis of data was done using OpenCode qualitative data analysis software. Results: Hiding labor, short, accidental and unattended labor were the key and immediate reasons for delivering at home. Other reasons for delivering at home include culture and beliefs, negative attitudes and previous home delivery practice and health service and infrastructure. Conclusion: Most Borena women deliver at home because of the apparent reason of short and accidental labor. But the fundamental reason is, women hide labor till they are about to deliver due to culture and/or tradition influences. Equally, important is women have strong negative attitude about institutional delivery since ambulance does not take them home. Creative culture specific promotion activity and delivery service is required. ....................................... Thesis available at ACIPH Library
