Abstract:
Back ground: The reproductive health impacts of unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion
are high among women's especially in developing countries including Ethiopia. Intrauterine
contraceptive device (IUCD)is the only family planning method which is highly effective, reliable, inexpensive, non-hormonal, immediately reversible ,and long-acting contraceptive that can be initiated during the immediate postpartum period and it has no a negative effect on lactation. When compared with the use of other methods, use of IUCD results in fewer unintended pregnancies and fewer clinic visits(1). However, the use ofIUCD is still very low in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including Ethiopia where the level of fertility and unmet need for family planning is high.
Objectives: The aim was to assess utilization of IUCD and associated factors among family
planning users at Public Health Centers in Lega Tafo Lega Dadi, Oromia Special Zone, Ethiopia,
2019.One hundred ninety one participants were selected by Systematic sampling technique from
January01-30/2019.
Methods: Institutional based cross-sectional study design will be conducted. A sample size of
191was determined using single population proportion formula with an assumption of 95% CI,
5% margin of error, 10% non-response rate. Binary Logistic regression employed to assess
association between variables with 95% CI and p value less than 0.05 was set association.
Result: From total 191 participants of the study 13(6.8%) were currently using IUCD. The
number of children they had (AOR=0.008, 95% CI= 0.000-0.56), religion (AOR=O.l26, 95%
CI= 0.018-0.892), Not knowing whether the service had a cost or not (AOR=12.04, 95% CI=
1.88-76.99) were significant factors found to be associated with utilization on UCD.
Conclusion: Therefore to scale up more utilization of IUCD, focus on mothers who had more
children and council them whether the service was given for free or for cost. At the same time
deal and discuss the religious issue with your client since some religious followers might thought
using modem contraceptive method (IUCD) was against the will of their religion.................................. Thesis available at ACIPH Library
