Background: Studies show that substance use, particularly in developing countries has
dramatically increased.
Objective: To assess proportion of substance use and associated factors for substance use
among preparatory school students in Addis Ababa, bole sub-city.
Methods: school based cross-sectional study design was applied in two governments and two
private preschools in Bole sub-city Addis Ababa. The school was randomly selected and self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. The association between the dependent and
independent variables were analyzed using Bivariate and multivariate analysis. For multivariable logistic regression analysis 95% confidence interval was computed and variables with p-value <0.05 were considered as statistically significant to the dependent variable.
Result: A total of 502 students participated in the study with a response rate of 95.44%. The
life time prevalence of substance use among preparatory school students was 3B.20% and alcohol the commonest type substance consumed 33.33% by students. History of substance use in the family member of AOR=4.20(95% Cl: 2.4B-B.05) have pocket money AOR=1.53 (95% CI:1.02-2.3) being male AOR=1.76(95% Cl: 1.17-2.63) and age 1B-19 AOR=1. 7B(95%Cl: 1.15-2.77) age above 19 A 0 R= 3.21 (1.2B-B.05) were factors significant associated with substance use.
Conclusion & recommendation: Prevalence of preparatory school students of Bole sub-city
is high and working collaboration with concerned bodies is required to reduce substance use.
